How Medellín compares internationally
Colombia scores very well on global health indices. In the 2023 Legatum Prosperity Index, Colombia ranked 36th in health, while the United States ranked 69th. You didn’t expect that, did you? I know it’s striking for international readers.
According to the WHO/World Bank Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Index, Colombia is close to the high coverage level of the U.S. (2021 data). Although city-level scores are not published, Medellín has many top-level hospitals and treats tens of thousands of international patients each year, including tourists, expats, digital nomads, and retirees, which speaks for itself.
Quick conclusion for international readers: Colombia’s healthcare and coverage results are competitive, but Medellín specifically exceeds standards thanks to its density of hospitals, depth of specialists, and international accreditations.
Top-ranked hospitals in Medellín
Newsweek’s 2025 list of “The World’s Best Hospitals: Colombia” ranks Hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe (No. 3 nationally) and Hospital Universitario San Vicente Fundación (No. 6) among the country’s leaders.
Other institutions in Medellín that are usually well ranked are Clínica Las Américas Auna, Clínica Medellín, Hospital General de Medellín, Clínica del Prado, Alma Máter de Antioquia, Clínica Universitaria Bolivariana, and the institutions of Universidad CES.
Why it matters to international patients: having several nationally good hospitals in a single metropolitan area is rare in Latin America and shortens referral times, improves continuity of care, and keeps subspecialists under the same urban umbrella.
International accreditations and global partnerships
Joint Commission International (JCI): Pablo Tobón Uribe Hospital has JCI accreditation. At the end of 2024, the audit of IQ InterQuirófanos, a center specializing in plastic surgery in Medellín, was completed, and they received the JCI Gold Seal.
Humanized ICUs (HU-CI + AENOR): In August 2024, Clínica Las Américas Auna became the first institution in South America to receive HU-CI–AENOR “Excellence” certification for its humanized intensive care.
Oncology alliance: The Cancer Institute at Clínica Las Américas is a sister institution of MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Innovation and firsts from Medellín
First lung transplant in Colombia (1997) , performed in Medellín by Dr. Alberto Villegas Hernández.
Large-scale complex cardiology: Medellín teams routinely perform open-heart surgery, structural interventions, and cardiac catheterization procedures, my parents both had been operated successfully.
Ophthalmology and refractive surgery: Medellín is a regional magnet for LASIK/SMILE and corneal procedures, my self-20 years ago had a laser operation.
Humanized intensive care: setting a benchmark in Latin America for family-centered ICU design.
World-renowned physicians (selection)
There are dozens of internationally recognized specialists in Medellín. Some examples include:
Dr. Alberto Villegas Hernández (Cardio VID): led Colombia’s first heart transplant (1985) and first lung transplant (1997).
Dr. Lina Cadavid Álvarez (HPTU): collaborator with Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard on pediatric radiology standards.
Interventional and cardiothoracic teams at San Vicente Fundación and Cardio VID: frequently cited in international societies for their pioneering work in structural heart interventions and complex surgeries.
Dr. Jaime Montoya (Dentistry): awarded Best Case in the LITe category at the Latin American Invisalign Forum in São Paulo
Dentistry with global partners and events
Medellín hosted Smile Train and Dentsply Sirona training in 2024: Clínica Noel is affiliated with Smile Train.
Major dental conferences in Medellín in 2025: COA, ACCOMF, and AESCO Stomatology/Oral Surgery.
Big savings for patients
Single dental implant (implant, abutment + crown): In Medellín, the full procedure costs $900 to $1,500, compared to $3,500 to $6,500 in the U.S. Means savings of up to 70–80%, with internationally certified materials and labs.
Full-arch All-on-4 implants: A complete restoration per arch runs $6,300 to $9,000 in Medellín versus $20,000 to $30,000 in the U.S., making it one of the most cost-effective options for patients seeking full-mouth rehabilitation.
Knee replacement surgery: Total cost in Medellín (including surgery, hospital stay, medications, and physical therapy) ranges from $6,120 to $12,550. In the U.S., the same procedure costs $36,000 to $62,000. That’s a savings of 60–80%, while patients recover in accredited facilities.
Cardiac bypass surgery: A bypass that can cost $80,000 in the U.S. averages $26,000 in Colombia. The combination of advanced cardiovascular centers and lower costs makes Medellín a strong option for patients seeking lifesaving procedures.
Real patient story Testimonial posted in Business Insider (2025): An American patient shared how she underwent a hysterectomy in Colombia for ~$4,000, compared to $15,000–$40,000 in the U.S. without insurance. She praised the modern hospital design, bilingual doctors, and transparent billing, calling Colombia “a world-class medical destination, not just a cheaper alternative.”
The numbers speak for themselves
In 2023, Colombia received around 85,000 international patients, according to ProColombia. Medellín alone treated 23,323 in 2024, according to the Medellín Health City Cluster and the Medellín Chamber of Commerce; almost one in four nationwide, despite the city accounting for less than 8% of Colombia’s 53.4 million inhabitants. If current growth rates continue, Medellín could reach around 35,000 international patients by 2027, representing tens of millions of dollars in direct healthcare revenue and an even greater impact on the local economy.
What the international press says
Business Insider/Yahoo (2025) In a widely read feature, an American patient described undergoing a hysterectomy in Colombia for about $4,000, compared to $15,000–$40,000 in the U.S. as mentioned above.
Forbes Advisor (2024–2025) Several guides on medical tourism, expats agencies and international insurances positioned Colombia, and Medellín in particular, as a smart choice for U.S. patients overwhelmed by healthcare costs. The articles highlighted how travel health insurance increasingly covers procedures abroad, making destinations like Medellín more accessible for insured medical travelers seeking quality and affordability.
I must add it applies also to the international community living in the city as expats, digital nomads or international retirees.
Medical Travel Magazine (January 25, 2025) “Clinica CES: Leading the Way in Colombia’s Medical Tourism Revolution.” This article spotlighted Clínica CES as a pioneering institution reshaping Colombia’s role as a global medical tourism leader. It emphasized CES’s commitment to human-centered care, scientific excellence, and ethical standards; all delivered as a non-profit. The clinic serves around 700 international patients annually, including from the U.S., Europe, and Latin America, while offering a wide range of specialties, from cardiology and gastroenterology to neurology, thoracic surgery, and dermatology.
Finance Colombia (2025) Reported Medellín’s record 23,323 international patients in 2024, underscoring the city’s role as a Latin American hub for healthcare. The coverage emphasized the combination of world-class physicians, advanced hospital infrastructure, and competitive pricing, while profiling the Medellín Health City cluster as a driver of inbound medical services.
Medical Tourism Magazine (2025) “Advanced Gastrointestinal Care at Instituto Gastroclínico in the Heart of Medellín.” The piece highlighted Medellín’s thriving role as a medical tourism hub, especially in gastroenterology. It emphasized the city’s high standards in advanced GI treatments, reinforced by modern infrastructure and patient-focused care. The article noted that “Medellín offers not only cutting-edge treatments but also a warm, culturally rich recovery environment, making it an ideal destination for patients seeking both excellence and healing.”
Placidway (February 2025) Featured Colombia’s leadership in regenerative medicine, especially stem cell therapy. The report explained that clinics in Medellín offer treatments at 60–75% lower cost than in the U.S., while maintaining international-quality standards. It described state-of-the-art facilities, internationally trained specialists, and comprehensive care programs tailored for medical tourists.
